Questions and Answers

What does Fostering Technology do?
We receive donated computers, wipe all existing data from the storage media, reinstall the original operating system, install other free or properly licensed software, then distribute the computers, free of charge, to children in need.

How can I apply for a computer for a child?
Print and complete the application forms located at www.fosteringtechnology.org.

Why should I donate my computer?
Most computers replaced in homes and offices still exceed the technology needed for children to learn how to type, write and print school reports, and learn basic computers skills needed in virtually every job.

I don’t have the original documentation for my computer. Can you still use it?
Yes. We do not need the original documentation. However, we strongly encourage donors to locate and include the original software installations disc(s) and Microsoft Windows® Certificate of Authenticity. We do not have the funding to purchase a Windows license for donated computers (~$149.00/each). We rely on being able to reinstall the original version of Windows® that was installed on your computer system.

Do you want my broken computer?
Please contact us with details of the computer and its symptoms. We may be able to repair your computer or use it to repair others.

What about all my personal information on my computer?
We utilize PDWIPE from Digital Intelligence. Essentially, PDWIPE will overwrite every part of your hard drive 7 times. An 8th pass is then made to verify that all the data has been removed. We then reinstall the original operating system before distributing the computer to a child. If requested, we will send you a print-out of the PDWIPE report which documents the destruction of the data contained on the drive(s) you donate. PDWIPE performs a declassification drive wipe in accordance with NAVSO P5239-10. This wiping algorithm exceeds that specified by the Department of Defense (DOD) 5220.22-M specification for both “clearing” and “purging” of sensitive information on hard drives.

Who will get my computer?
We distribute computers to children under the age of 18 who have completed the application and selection process and shown a desire to learn.

What computer equipment do you need?
We accept a large variety of computer hardware, such as: computers, monitors, keyboards, mice, speakers, printers, scanners, digital cameras, computer desks, networking equipment, etc.

Is my donation tax deductible?
Yes. Fostering Technology is a nonprofit corporation organized under the Revised Iowa Nonprofit Corporation Act in the State of Iowa and has been given 501(c)(3) status from the Internal Revenue Service (I.R.S.) We will provide you with a receipt for your donation which may be used as a tax deduction.

Do you pay a salary to any employees?
No. All labor is performed on a voluntary basis.

How can I help?
If you don’t have a computer to donate think of a way you can spread the word. There are a large number of people and businesses who are very likely willing to donate their old systems. Refurbishing the computers is our priority so we have a limited amount of time to solicit donations.

What would you purchase with my cash donation?
The money we pay out goes to purchasing: hosting for our website ($60/yr), printing of trifolds ($0.13/ea), postage, floppy disks for students, etc.

Do the computers come with internet access?
No. We do not have the funding to provide internet access accounts.
